WHO approves second dengue vaccineWHO approves second dengue vaccine

Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the second dengue vaccine. This initiative taken by the organization will provide protection to millions of people around the world against mosquito-borne diseases.

A statement issued by the agency said that the agency has approved the dengue vaccine made by Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda.

WHO recommends this vaccine for use in children aged six to 16 years who live in areas with high dengue rates. Two doses of this vaccine provide protection against four types of dengue.

The WHO approval means that the vaccine can now be purchased by various donors and other UN agencies and distributed to poor countries.

In studies, the vaccine has been shown to be 84 percent effective in preventing dengue patients from being hospitalized and an estimated 61 percent effective in relieving symptoms.

It should be noted that this vaccine named Q Dengue has previously received approval from the European Medicines Agency in 2022.
