Microsoft says a group of hackers called ‘Holy Souls’ has claimed to have the names and other details of more than 200,000 subscribers to the French magazine Charlie Hebdo.
A hacking team backed by the Iranian government stole and leaked customer data from a French magazine, Microsoft security researchers said.
At the beginning of January, the magazine was hacked, shortly before that, cartoons of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei were published in the magazine.
The cartoons were published in support of the ongoing anti-government protests in Iran.
Microsoft researchers say the hack targeting Charlie Hebdo was part of an operation to influence digital platforms and used the same techniques as other activities by Iranian-backed hacking teams.
Microsoft said information obtained by hackers could target magazine subscribers to extremist organizations online and physically.
