5 days to return the Saudi gifts to the former president

Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro, a diamond set given to him by Saudi Arabia.

The Brazilian court gave former President Bolsonaro 5 days to return the gifts given by Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia gave 5 expensive jewelry items to Bolsonaro during his presidency.

Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts has ordered a former army captain to return two pistols given to him by the United Arab Emirates in 2019 to the presidential palace.

According to Brazilian law, government officials can only receive gifts that are highly personal or of minimal value.

The scandal came to light after Brazilian newspaper Estadio de Sao Paulo reported that customs officials had intercepted the Bolsonaro government’s Minister of Minerals and Energy on his return to Brazil from Saudi Arabia in October 2021 after diamond jewelry was found in his possession.

In the same trip, Bolsonaro managed to keep a jewelry set in his custody that the authorities could not seize.

In media reports, the price of one set of Saudi jewelry is 3.2 million dollars, while another is 75 thousand dollars.

It should be noted that when bringing goods worth more than 1000 dollars into Brazil, they have to be declared and heavy export taxes have to be paid.

If former President Bolsonaro had counted these gifts as official gifts, they could have come into the country tax-free, but they would have had to be kept in the presidential palace.
