Beijing: Herbivorous sauropod dinosaurs are known to have the longest necks, but a species has been discovered in China with a neck 15 meters long, 10 feet longer than a children’s school bus.
It was named ‘Mamin Che Sarus Sinocynidorum’. Although its deposits were discovered in China in 1987, the first research report came out in 1993. However, further analysis revealed that his neck was longer than 49 feet.
Now a new study has been conducted by Dr. Andrew Moore, a neurologist at Stony Brook University in New York. They have evaluated mamin-chi SARS with computerized tomography and this technology was not available before. They have recently seen more remains of the ‘Mamin Che Sars’, particularly the neck bones.
The neck seals of three of these specimens were measured and compared with other similar dinosaurs. It is said that ‘Mamin Chi Sars’ had not one, not two but 18 seals on its neck and its total length was 49 feet which is around 15 meters.
Some sauropod dinosaurs had long necks similar to those of storks and hung 20 to 30 degrees above the horizon. Sauropods appeared 16 million years ago and became extinct along with their fellows about 6.5 million years ago.
