The Election Commission formed a committee to investigate the irregularities in the local elections in Karachi.
According to the Chief Election Commissioner, the committee will review the records and documents submitted by the petitioners, returning and presiding officers and the case will be taken forward in the light of the recommendations of the investigation committee of the Election Commission.
The inquiry committee has been directed to submit its report before February 28.
Hearing of the case
Earlier, a five-member bench headed by the Chief Election Commissioner heard a case of irregularities in the Karachi local elections. The concerned ROs and presiding officers appeared before the Election Commission.
The returning officer said that he did not keep the original copy of the result forms with him, I gave the duty in the elections for the first time and suddenly it came to know that the duty was imposed in the Election Commission.
The Chief Election Commissioner asked if your training is complete now, Presiding Officers answer carefully because if you tell a lie you can lose your job and even go to jail. There is a difference between the forms given to ROs and Polling Agents.
Most of the ROs opted out of verifying the forms with the polling agents.
The presiding officers said that the original forms were given to the returning officers. The Chief Election Commissioner said that you are requested to let the case proceed. The polling agent said that firing continued on the day of polling in the municipal elections.
The Election Commission bench asked the AC Orangi Town what he was doing when such incidents were happening, to which the AC Orangi Town said that I am a human being and I have to do other things at a time. Yes, you call three times in each case.
Member Commission Ikramullah Khan said that this work is done by humans, that is why you have been hired. During the hearing, the Chief Election Commissioner directed to write to the Chief Secretary to suspend the AC.
Member Commission Hasan Bharwana said that I wanted to arrest you, I have also been in AC and never dared to do such a thing. The member commission instructed Saeed Ghani to complain about this behavior of AC to the Chief Minister of Sindh.
People’s Party leader Saeed Ghani said that this behavior is inappropriate, I want to apologize, I apologize with folded hands.
Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission, why the elections were not made safe. Member Commission Nisar Durrani said that this case is being held in the Election Commission on his request, to which Hafiz Naeem said yes, but the case is being delayed.
Saeed Ghani said that Jamaat-e-Islami has no authority to do this case instead of the candidate. In three Union Council recounts, two were won by the People’s Party and one by Jamaat-e-Islami. They talk of recounts and blame again for losing. Our people travel from Karachi, this process is painful for us.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that now your final arguments will be held, it will not take much time, you will not be called again and again from Karachi. The hearing of the case was adjourned till February 28.
