Italian coast guards rescued a migrant boat off the coast of Lampe Dossa island, but 8 people on board died while 40 passengers were rescued.
Rescue personnel transferred the surviving passengers to the main port of Lampe Dosa.
Italian authorities also rescued three other boats arriving in Lampe Dosa, carrying 156 migrants seeking to reach Europe.
North African migrants are making their way to Italy in large numbers, mostly on the island of Lampe Dossa, a major entry point into Europe.
According to the Italian Ministry of Interior, 15,120 immigrants entered Italy in 2022.
The same number was 61 thousand 477 in 2021 and 34 thousand 154 in 2020.
