Dublin: New research tells us that diabetes patients who lose weight to control the disease also have a significantly reduced risk of heart disease.
A study published in the scientific journal ‘Diabetologia’ revealed that substantial weight loss in type 2 diabetes patients also reduces the risk of heart disease.
Lead researcher Edward Greig at the RSCI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Ireland said weight loss has been shown to improve type 2 diabetes control, as well as reducing other medical complications associated with the disease. This includes reducing the risk of heart disease by 40% and kidney disease risk by 33%.
He said this is encouraging news for those trying to overcome type 2 diabetes.
For the study, researchers followed data on 5,145 obese patients with type 2 diabetes for 12 years. The results showed that patients who were given a strict diet and lifestyle schedule were able to lose weight and control their type 2 diabetes to the point where they no longer needed medication and their blood sugar levels were low. My sugar level remained normal.
