Javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won Pakistan’s first medal in the World Athletics Championships.
Arshad Nadeem won the silver medal in the javelin throw event of the championships in Budapest, Hungary, finishing second by less than half a meter to gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.
In the javelin throw final of the World Athletics Championship, Arshad Nadeem threw 87.82 meters in the third round, which was his best throw among all the throws, but he could not surpass India’s Neeraj Chopra who threw 88.17 meters.
Arshad Nadeem threw the javelin 74.80 meters in the first throw, 82.81 in the second throw, 87.82 in the third throw, 87.15 in the fourth throw and 81.86 meters in the sixth throw.
Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra were fighting for the gold medal till the last throw.
Arshad Nadeem’s medal was assured when fourth-placed Julian Weber hit his final throw of 79.01m and Jacob Weddlege failed to overtake Arshad Nadeem.
In the final round, Arshad Nadeem had to throw more than 88.17 meters but he did not succeed in this and his final throw was 81.86 meters due to which Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem were declared as the rightful for the gold medal.
Czech Republic’s Jakub Wedlij was awarded the bronze medal. 12 athletes participated in the final Javelin Throw competition, three of which were from India.
Arshad Nadeem’s throw of 87.82 meters is his best throw this season.
It may be noted that Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal in Birmingham last year with a throw of 90.18 meters and became the first South Asian athlete to throw more than 90 meters.
His throw is still the second highest by any Asian player.
