This device can identify the coronavirus in the air within minutes

Washington: Recently, American researchers have created a machine slightly larger than a toaster that can detect the presence of the corona virus in the air within minutes.

Researchers detailed the invention this month in the journal Nature Communications It takes just five minutes to detect seven to 35 viral particles per liter of air. Aerosol scientist Rajan Chakraborty of Washington University in St. Louis said it is as sensitive as the PC nasal swab test. He said that his team worked non-stop for three years to create such a device.

A major challenge in airborne virus sampling is concentrating virus particles to detectable levels, which requires large volumes of air. This device is capable of drawing 1000 liters of air every minute.

“We create an artificial storm inside the device to capture the virus,” said Rajan Chakraborty. The liquid swirls at high speeds, trapping the viruses in the cyclone walls and concentrating them for analysis. These viruses are then filtered from the air with a HEPA filter attached to the device. After five minutes of virus collection, the liquid is pumped into the biosensor.
