New underwater octopus nursery discovered near Costa Rica

San Jose: Researchers have discovered an octopus nursery about 2 miles below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Costa Rica.

According to global media reports, during a three-week expedition, scientists aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Falkor research vessel discovered an underwater population of hundreds of octopuses that spread over an area the size of a football field.

The octopus nursery is located at a depth of 2,800 meters (1.7 miles) and was discovered by the ship-launched underwater robot ROV Subastian.

“We could see that the females were protecting their eggs in this nursery while some of the eggs were about to hatch,” said Beth Orcutt, senior research scientist and geomicrobiologist at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.

On the other hand, Jorge Cortes, a researcher at the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology at the University of Costa Rica, said that it was a really interesting moment because we were not expecting it.
