In China, a Supreme Court judge was sentenced to 12 years in prison for accepting $3.3 million in bribes over two decades.
Judge Meng Xiang was a former director of the Supreme People’s Court Enforcement Bureau and a member of the Bureau’s Trial Committee.
He has also been fined $290,000 for admitting to accepting bribes from 2003 to 2020.
The Zhengzhou City Court said that Judge Meng took bribes by taking advantage of his position and authority and facilitated various individuals in court decisions, cadre selection including law enforcement matters, and awarded construction contracts to various companies.
The investigation was launched two years ago against Judge Meng, 58, who has been part of the judicial system for more than 30 years.
He started his career as a clerk at Beijing Local District Court.
All their ill-gotten gains will be confiscated and the profits earned thereon will also be deposited in the national treasury.
The court ruling said that Judge Meng is being given a reduced sentence because he has expressed shame for his actions and admitted to accepting bribes on several occasions that the authorities were not aware of.
