Notices were issued to the Election Commission and the Governor of Punjab on the request for general elections in Punjab.
In the Lahore High Court, a hearing was held on various petitions filed regarding the announcement of the date of general elections in Punjab. The court issued a notice to the Election Commission and the Governor of Punjab and sought their response on February 9.
The position was taken in the petition that the Election Commission issued the supplementary schedule of the National Assembly constituencies showing malice. As the general election schedule is not released, the privilege of the voters of the constituency is being denied. It is a constitutional requirement to hold elections within ninety days of the dissolution of assemblies.
It was further stated in the petition that the Election Commission is deviating from the constitution by not issuing the election schedule despite the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly. Issuance of the election schedule for fair and transparent elections is a democratic basis. Contrary to Article 105 of the Constitution, the Governor does not issue the election schedule due to malice. The court ordered the Election Commission to release the election schedule for Punjab.
