Islamabad High Court orders to hold local body elections in the capital within 120 days

Islamabad: The High Court has ordered that local body elections be held in Islamabad within 120 days and there will be a ban on increasing the number of USCs before the elections.

A hearing was held on intra-court appeals against the decision of the local body election in Islamabad. A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Islamabad High Court heard the appeals. The Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs appeared before the court.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice said that now the legislation has been passed, are there 125 union councils established now? The government has kept the power to increase more USCs, I think there is no need to increase union councils for ten years now, once elections are held, whoever wants to come can come.

The Chief Justice said, “Can you give a statement that you will not increase USCIS before this election?” If you do not give this statement, we will order it ourselves, we will write in the decision that the USCIs will not increase before this election.

The DG Law Election Commission told the Chief Justice that they will conduct local body elections in Islamabad in 120 days, they will make new constituencies and schedule them according to the amendment law.

The Chief Justice said that it is a matter of the election of the provincial assemblies. On this, the Election Commission said that according to the law, we are bound to consult with the federal government even in local bodies.

During the hearing, the Islamabad High Court disposed of the intra-court appeals related to the local body elections in Islamabad while ordering the holding of local body elections in Islamabad within 120 days.

The federal government assured that no changes will be made in 125 union councils.

The court said in the verdict that the local body elections in Islamabad will be held in 125 union councils in 120 days, the federal government will be prohibited from increasing the number of USCs again before the elections.
