According to experts, the migration of wild animals and birds is a very difficult and skillful task. A person who can safely translocate wild animals and birds is considered an expert in the field of wildlife all over the world.
Dr. Rizwan Khan, Senior Veterinary Officer, Punjab Wildlife, told Express News that various methods are used to transfer the animals, including full anesthesia, semi-anesthetization and boma technique.
He said that some species of deer are very sensitive and there is a risk of being harmed if they are caught alive. Hence, they are called fully unconscious or semi-unconscious. Some of the lions, tigers and other animals of this species will have to be sedated, while another cage will be placed next to the door of some cages and the tiger will be scared and moved into it. Special boxes are prepared for giraffe, rhinoceros, hippopotamus and these animals are trained to enter these boxes.
Dr. Rizwan Khan said that Boma technique is a safe method of capturing and moving animals from one place to another which has been used earlier for translocation of deer in Bahawalpur and Cholistan. In order to anesthetize the animals, each animal has to be given a different type of anesthetic in different doses according to its health and age, a little carelessness can kill the animal, in the same way some animals lose consciousness. An antidote has to be given to induce it. A dot gun is also used for this and the injection can be done by holding the animal manually.
He also informed that the season from October to November is considered as the most favorable season for animal migration.
