NATO announced the establishment of a new cell for the protection of marine energy sources

NATO has announced the formation of a new ‘Critical Undersea Infrastructure Coordination Cell’ to protect undersea energy sources.

Under this seal, NATO will be able to effectively protect its undersea infrastructure in and around the Baltic Sea.

This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg today in Brussels.

On this occasion, he also announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Hans Werner Wermann, a senior military officer from Germany, as the first head of this organization.

It should be noted that last September, news of the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline, which supplies gas to Europe from Russia, highlighted the vulnerability of undersea energy pipelines and communication cables.

NATO allies have significantly increased their military presence around critical infrastructure, including naval and aircraft.

In January of this year, NATO and the European Union established a joint task force for the protection of critical infrastructure, in the light of whose recommendations it has now been formally decided to establish a modern centre.

According to the Secretary General of NATO, this center will ensure the security of the undersea infrastructure of allied countries using the latest technology and best practices.

The head of this body, General Verman, previously held the position of Director General of the International Military Staff at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.
