New Delhi: After the death of 70 children from cough syrup imported from India, Gambia’s president ordered a case against the Indian government, including Gan, the importer of the contaminated syrup.
It should be noted that the toxic force was formed last November in Gambia after the death of children under 2 years of age due to cough syrup imported from India, which submitted its report in March this year after a thorough investigation.
According to the task force, the Gambian government through the Ministry of Justice should immediately initiate legal proceedings against Atlantic Pharmaceuticals (importer), Maiden Pharmaceuticals (Indian manufacturer) and the Indian government to seek redress on behalf of the families of the victims.
The Gambian government has accepted the task force’s recommendation and legal action has been initiated against the Indian pharmaceutical company and the US-based importer Atlantic Pharmaceuticals, which purchased the drugs for Gambia from the Indian manufacturer.
It should be noted that there is a fifth scientific report, the results of which indicate that the products of the Indian firm were contaminated with highly toxic chemicals Diethylene Glycol (DEG) and Ethylene Glycol (EG). However, the Indian government has categorically refused to recognize any action by the local firm.
It should be remembered that the World Health Organization had also issued a global alert on substandard Indian medicines in December last year.
