Shooting in New Zealand before the opening match of the Women's Football World Cup, 2 people were killed

Auckland: 2 people were killed and 6 injured before the opening match of the Women’s Football World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.

According to foreign media reports, a gunman killed two people in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, on Thursday as the opening match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament was about to begin in the country.

According to local media, the shooting occurred near Eden Park, where the opening match of the match was scheduled to start shortly after, after the incident, police cordoned off the area and tightened security.

The attacker was also killed and six other people, including at least one police officer, were wounded during the shooting, near hotels where Team Norway and other soccer teams were staying, officials said. Prime Minister Chris Hopkins assured the public that there was ‘no major threat to national security’ from the shooting.

Foreign media have revealed that the man involved in the shooting has been identified as 24-year-old Mato Tangi, who was recently sentenced to five months’ detention by the Auckland District Court for domestic violence.
