Srinagar:(PNP) Kashmiri resistance leader and head of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Yasin Malik, who has been in Indian custody for seven years, has expressed distrust in the Indian judiciary and decided not to defend himself any further in the cases pending against him.
Yasin Malik was arrested by Indian forces from Srinagar on April 10, 2019. He was accused of the alleged abduction and murder of a nurse in 1990.
Through his lawyer, Abu Adil Pandit, Yasin Malik submitted a 25-page written statement to the Additional Sessions Court in Srinagar, stating that he had been unable to communicate with his wife and daughter for several years.
The Kashmiri leader said that after considerable thought, he had decided not to pursue the case any further. However, he stressed that this decision did not mean that he was accepting the prosecution’s allegations or admitting guilt in the case against him.
In his written statement, Yasin Malik also referred to his prolonged imprisonment, solitary confinement and years of separation from his family.
Addressing his daughter, he advised her to remain in contact with her grandmother and said that he had presented his position and the voice of his conscience before the court, leaving the rest to Allah.
He explicitly stated in his written statement: “I will no longer defend the case. The court may make any decision regarding me.”
The Kashmiri leader also rejected the prosecution’s allegations, saying that he had been implicated in a false case because of the prevailing political circumstances. He also raised questions about a handwritten note allegedly belonging to the JKLF, which the prosecution has presented as key evidence.
In his statement, Yasin Malik also referred to meetings and negotiations held with the Indian government after 2000. According to him, he met Indian officials, including Ajit Doval, during that period.
He further stated that then-Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had approved $50,000 for his medical treatment in the United States, but he had refused to accept the money.
In his written statement, Yasin Malik also announced his separation from his wife and explained the decision by citing the example of Nelson Mandela’s marital life during his imprisonment. He said that he had taken the decision because he had been unable to remain in contact with his wife for a prolonged period.
