Karachi: Experts have said that the terrible cyclone ‘Baparjoy’ in the Arabian Sea could be the longest-lasting cyclone in recent history.

Buparjoy was fully formed on June 6 and is expected to persist for ten days. Thus, it may also be the longest-lived large and intense cyclone in the Pakistan and Indian Oceans in recent decades.

The first cyclone to form in the Arabian Sea in the last ten years was Okchi, which lasted for seven days and formed in November-December 2014. Then in April-May 2019, the duration of Cyclone Fani was only seven days. In June 2019, another Cyclone Vayu lasted for 8 days which was a very severe type of Cyclone. Then came the turn of Kiarnami Super Cyclone which lasted for 6 days.

This is the reason why Buparjoy storm can be called the longest reigning cyclone in the last ten years.

It should be noted that the number of cyclones and their intensity have increased by 80% due to global warming, irregular weather and climate change in the Arabian Sea alone. The abundance of cyclones, especially during the monsoon season, not only affects the marine routine but also damages fishing, trade and other activities.
