After last year's floods, 3 million people were exposed to malaria

Islamabad: A sub-committee of the Public Accounts Committee expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the malaria control program after the floods last year, which revealed that 3 million people were infected with malaria.

The sub-committee meeting of the Public Accounts Committee was chaired by Convener Syed Hussain Tariq in which the audit objections related to the Ministry of Health for 2005-06 and 2017-18 were reviewed. The committee expressed its displeasure over the non-meeting of departmental accounts committees for several months.

During the meeting, it was revealed that 3 million people in the country had malaria after the floods. The committee expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the malaria control programme.

Convener Committee Syed Hussain Tariq said that people do not have houses in the flood-affected areas, what are the malaria control program people doing there? I did not see Malaria Control Program officials in these areas, urban and rural areas were inundated in Hyderabad.

Malaria control program officials responded that malaria is a rural disease. Syed Hussain Tariq inquired whether malaria does not occur in urban areas. How much did the malaria control program cost in rural areas?

The committee sought details from the Malaria Control Program officials about the measures taken in the flood-affected areas.
