Brasilia: Brazil’s former president has been charged with smuggling out valuable watches and jewelry he received as a gift.
According to a foreign news agency, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was charged with trying to illegally transfer gifts worth $3 million out of the country through an adviser.
The report said that the former Brazilian president was gifted jewelry and a valuable watch by the Saudi government in 2021. His wife was also gifted valuable jewellery.
According to Brazilian law, presidents are not allowed to take foreign gifts with them after they have been deposited in the vault, while anything worth more than $1,000 must be declared.
Former president Jair Bolsonaro has denied allegations of bribery, while current president Lula de Silva has announced an investigation into the matter.
