London: Farmers in the UK have warned they could face food shortages by May due to bad weather in North Africa and local crop delays.

According to the World News Agency, Britain imports a lot of non-seasonal fruits and vegetables from Morocco and Spain in winter, but this year only a quarter of the crops from Spain and Morocco reached London due to bad weather.

Since then there is a shortage of food items across the country. The food shortage is due to severe cold, rain and flooding in Southern Europe and North African countries affecting supplies.

In Spain and Morocco, severe winters, continuous rains and floods made it difficult for farmers to harvest the crops and then transport them to the UK.

Fruits and vegetables have disappeared from many superstores in the country and citizens are in trouble. Tomatoes, black pepper, cucumbers, salad, broccoli, cauliflower are being sold in limited quantities in the markets as per government instructions.

Meanwhile, rising energy costs have delayed planting locally, prompting experts and growers to warn that UK-wide fruit and vegetable shortages will continue until May.
