Lahore: The demand for Khalistan by the Sikhs in Indian Punjab is gaining momentum.

According to Express News, supporters of pro-Khalistan Sikh leader Amrit Pal Singh staged a big protest in Amritsar yesterday and put the Indian Punjab police on the backfoot.

Thousands of Sikhs on Thursday demonstrated for the release of Lopreet Tovan Singh, a close associate of Sikh leader Amrit Pal Singh, and the peaceful protest turned violent when police used force to disperse the protesters.

An Indian journalist covering the pro-Khalistan Sikh protest in Amritsar told Express that the Sikh protesters had sticks, swords, kirpans and weapons and had occupied the police station premises.

Pro-Khalistan Amrit Pal Singh has emerged as a popular leader of the separatist Sikhs in the last few months and the number of his supporters is increasing day by day.
Indian Sikh leader Majindersingh Sirsa has said that the Aam Aadmi Party is once again creating a situation like the Congress in 1980 in Punjab.

According to reports, several people have been injured on both sides in the clash between the Sikh protesters and the police.

In the face of growing Sikh protests, the police surrendered and assured the release of the arrested Sikh leader Lopreet Tovan Singh today (Friday), after which the Sikhs temporarily ended the protest and camped at the local Gurdwara Sahib.

According to the protestors, they will not go back until the police release Lopreet Tofan Singh and the protestors have also demanded to drop the cases registered against Amrit Pal Singh and his associates.

During this protest of the Sikhs, the atmosphere of Amritsar continued to echo with slogans of Khalistan.
