In Pakistan, about seven thousand children die every day due to various diseases, out of which about 150 children lose their lives due to various birth defects.
Congenital defects or birth defects of children can be corrected by operation or surgery soon after birth but unfortunately there are less than 200 pediatric surgeons in Pakistan.
This was disclosed by renowned pediatric surgeon and president of Association of Pediatric Surgeons of Pakistan Dr. Muhammad Arshad in a special conversation with journalists on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion of World Pediatric Surgery Day 2024, Dr. Muhammad Arshad said that the number of children under the age of 15 in Pakistan is 33%, but the number of pediatric surgeons for these children’s surgeries in Pakistan is very less.
On the other hand, where only 19% of the US population consists of children under the age of 15, hundreds of pediatric surgeons are available around the clock for general and complex surgeries on children.
Dr. Arshad said that birth defects of children are the fifth major cause of death among them. He said that apart from birth defects, children’s surgeons are also needed for accidents, kidney stones, cancer and other diseases. About 26 to 27 thousand children lose their lives every year in Pakistan due to severe shortage of surgeons.
Dr. Arshad said that due to the lack of job opportunities in the private and public sectors in Pakistan, Pakistani paediatricians, especially paediatricians, go abroad in dozens, as a result of which the deaths of children in Pakistan are increasing day by day. Increasing.
He suggested on this occasion that the posts of pediatric surgeons should be created in all the district hospitals of Pakistan so that the lives of children can be saved by performing complex operations in the district hospitals.
He further said that only Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad have special children’s hospitals, which are under pressure from patients coming from all over Pakistan and hundreds of treatable children die of complications due to late diagnosis. They become righteous.
He said that if pediatric surgeons are appointed in district hospitals, the death rate among children can be reduced to a great extent through early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
On this occasion, other health experts said that steps need to be taken locally to prevent Pakistani health experts from going abroad to prevent the growing shortage of health experts in Pakistan.
