Brasilia: The Brazilian government has said it will call an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council today following the Hamas attack on Israel.
According to international media reports, the Brazilian government, which this month assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council, issued a statement condemning the attacks and expressing solidarity with the people of Israel.
However, Brazil’s foreign ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to a “two-state solution”. “We reiterate that there is no justification for resorting to violence, especially against civilians,” the ministry added. Brazil urges both sides to show maximum restraint to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Brazil further said that conflict is not a viable alternative to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian issue and the resumption of peace talks is an urgent need.
It should be noted that the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years, killing at least 250 Israelis and injuring hundreds. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared war, vowing to retaliate.
