During the first Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Indian commentator Dinesh Karthik and Australian commentator Mark Waugh had a fist bump which was recorded by the camera.
It should be noted that the Australians called the Nagpur pitch a tamper, but on the same wicket, the Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first.
This decision could not prove correct for the Kangaroos and the visiting team’s first innings ended at 177 runs. India scored 77 runs for the loss of just one wicket by the end of the day.
Where the heat was seen on the field, there was also a war of words between the Indian and Australian commentators.
Dinesh Karthik said ‘I think India will bat only once in this match’ to which Mark Waugh said ‘We will see Dinesh.’
On this, the Indian commentator said ‘Write down my words’, to which Mark Waugh replied, ‘What time is it? It is five minutes past three. I will write this in my diary. It (Dinesh) may be right but not all will be easy.’
Dinesh Karthik says ‘It’s not as difficult as the Australian batsmen made it out to be.’ Mark Waugh said, ‘I mean don’t make any decisions about the pitch until both sides have batted. Let’s see how things unfold. This session is going to be huge, the Australians will not let the Indians go so easily.’
Mark Waugh termed the Indian batting line as superficial and said ‘This Indian batting line is not as good as some Australian players. I can’t see two players averaging 60 in this team.
In response, Dinesh Karthik said that ‘India has only one player with an average above 60.’ On this, Mark Waugh praised Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Chiteshwar Pujara.
