The FIFA Women’s Football World Cup got off to a spectacular start, with Norway and hosts New Zealand clashing in the opening match at a packed stadium in Auckland.
There was an interesting match between the two teams. Neither team scored in the first half, but as the second half began, Hannah Wilkinson headed the ball into the net in the 48th minute to give New Zealand a lead that lasted until the end of the match.
The second match of the mega event was played between the co-hosts Australia and Ireland in Sydney.
Australia were awarded a penalty kick early in the second half which was converted by Stephanie Catley. After that neither team could score and Australia won the match 1-0.
