In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the rate of thalassemia patients started increasing due to inter-family marriages.
Gula Khan, a resident of Wazir Bagh area of Peshawar, brings his 10-year-old son suffering from thalassemia for blood transfusion twice a month.
Gula Khan says that due to the custom of marriages in his own family in Pakhtun culture, his son contracted this deadly disease, but now he wants either this custom should end or the test should be mandatory before marriage. Should be rented.
Gula Khan is not the only father in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa whose family has children suffering from thalassemia as a result of intermarriage. The highest rate is in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to doctors, there are currently more than 25,000 thalassemia patients in the province.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2009, in order to prevent thalassemia, it was made mandatory for the couple to get tested before marriage, but it could not be implemented.
