Tehran: An Iranian court sentenced popular rapper Tomaj Salehi to 6 years and 3 months in prison for participating in protests in the country last year.

According to Al Jazeera’s report, the Twitter account burned by supporters of Tomaj Salehi was informed about the punishment. The Iranian authorities have refrained from commenting on this issue.

Tomaj Salehi was among thousands of young Iranians who took to the streets last fall following the death of Mehsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by Iran’s “morality police” for violating the country’s strict dress code. What happened and he died in custody.

Rapper Salehi, 33, was arrested last October and has criticized Iran’s government in songs and music videos that have received wide acclaim.
