Ohio: Many household chemicals, including hair products, furniture sprays and disinfectants, can pose a mental health risk, according to experts.
According to media reports, research conducted by American experts has shown that many household chemicals can increase the risk of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and autism.
The research was done by experts from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in the United States, which was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
The study found that out of 1,823 common chemicals tested, 292 chemicals were toxic to a special type of brain cell called the ‘oligodendrocyte’. Oligodendrocytes are the cells responsible for creating a protective insulation around nerve cells.
The study’s lead author, Dr. Paul Tesar, said in the news release that loss of oligodendrocytes characterizes multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases.
Professor Donald and Ruth Weber, director of the Institute for Glial Sciences at the School of Medicine, who were part of the team of researchers, said that it has now been established that there are specific chemicals in household products that can directly damage oligodendrocytes. .
He added that in the past, the chemical elements linked to neurological disease were unclear, but this recent research makes the chemical elements more clear.
