Precautions to be taken to protect against seasonal colds

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued an advisory regarding the prevention of seasonal colds in view of the increasing number of flu cases in the country.

NIH said in the advisory that flu cases usually increase in Pakistan between December and February as the temperature drops during the winter season.

The advisory said that the purpose of this advisory is to alert health authorities and other stakeholders to ensure timely prevention and preventive measures.

According to the NIH advisory, these measures are necessary to prepare to handle the workload expected to increase in the number of patients over the next few months.

The advisory said that during this time influenza virus i.e. seasonal colds, colds are likely to appear with mild symptoms.

Precautionary measures to prevent seasonal colds

Influenza virus can be spread from one person to another through coughing or sneezing.

The NIH has emphasized in the advisory that if someone is sick or has been in close contact with someone who has a cold, they should take some precautions.

1- Keep washing your hands thoroughly at intervals and use hand sanitizer if you are in a place where you cannot wash your hands.

2- Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

3- People suffering from colds should rest at home, avoid going out of the house except for essential work and do not go to crowded places.

Treatment of seasonal colds

According to the NIH advisory, vaccination is the most effective way to prevent serious consequences caused by the influenza virus.
