Pakistan Customs took action at Jinnah Terminal on information of iPhone smuggling
Karachi: An attempt to smuggle iPhones worth crores of rupees by Umrah pilgrims was foiled.
Pakistan Customs conducted an operation at Jinnah Terminal Karachi on reports of iPhone smuggling by Umrah pilgrims, in which 51 valuable iPhones were recovered from members of a suspected Umrah group arriving by Emirates Air flight.
The exported iPhones include 25 Nos. 15 ProMax, 12 Nos. 14 ProMax, 14 Nos. 11, 12 ProMax. The value of the smuggled iPhones is estimated to be Rs 2 crore 74 lakh. 88 lakh rupees worth of duty taxes were being stolen through smuggling.
According to the officials, smugglers were trying to take advantage of the facility of fast services for Umrah pilgrims at the airport arrival. In the operation, empty boxes of iPhones were recovered from the belongings of pilgrims while iPhones were recovered from the clothes worn.
Organized groups encourage visitors to bring one to 10 iPhones with the lure of cheap tickets and money. Pakistan Customs officials arrested 3 persons and obtained remand from the competent court.
