Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja replied to President Dr. Arif Alvi’s letter regarding the announcement of election date.
The Chief Election Commissioner has said in the reply letter written to the President that the National Assembly was dissolved by the President on August 9 on the recommendation of the Prime Minister under Article 58-1 of the Constitution.
The reply letter states that now Section 57 of the Election Act has been amended on June 26. Before this amendment, the President used to consult the Commission for the date of the election. There is an option to give dates.
According to the letter, article 48 five of the constitution should be read with article 58 two of the constitution, if the assembly is dissolved on the recommendation of the prime minister, the commission has the authority to give the date of general elections.
Besides, on the issue of the letter sent by the President to the Chief Election Commissioner, an important meeting of the Election Commission was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Sources say that the President’s letter has been considered in the meeting.
According to sources, the Chief Election Commissioner will not meet President Arif Alvi.
Yesterday, President Arif Alvi said in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja that the date of election should not be more than 90 days from the date of dissolution of assemblies.
The President of the State had said in his letter to the Chief Election Commissioner that on August 9, 2023, he dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of the Prime Minister.
It should be noted that President Dr. Arif Alvi had invited Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja to a meeting on Wednesday or Thursday (today) to decide the date of the general election.
