Millions of people were displaced in the devastating earthquake in Syria.
More than five million Syrians could be displaced after the devastating earthquakes, the United Nations said on Monday. These earthquakes occurred in the border areas of Syria and its neighboring country.
“As many as 5.3 million people could be displaced by the earthquake in Syria, a huge number in an already war-torn country,” Sivanka Dhanpala, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) Syrian representative, said on Friday. The country has a highly displaced population.
He added, “For Syria, it is a crisis within a crisis. We have had economic setbacks. First, Covid, and now we are also affected by winter.
It should be noted that survivors of the 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes have flown from other parts of Syria to camps set up for people displaced by the nearly 12-year war.
Many have lost their homes or are too scared to return to damaged buildings.
