Washington: 49-year-old Indian-origin Rajinder Pal Singh in the United States has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for smuggling more than 800 Indian citizens from Canada to the United States through the online ride-hailing service Uber.
According to international media reports, Rajinder Pal Singh alias Jaspal Gill pleaded guilty to being a key member of a smuggling ring that extorted more than $500,000 from each Indian national and thus smuggled hundreds of Indians across the border from Canada into the United States illegally. Judge Tessa M. Gorman said Singh, a California resident, was sentenced to 45 months in U.S. District Court for one count of transportation for profit and one count of conspiracy and money laundering for nonresidents.
The judge added that over a four-year period, Mr. Singh had illegally arranged to smuggle more than 800 people across the northern border into the United States and into Washington state.
