A large number of educated youth are unemployed in Sindh, Karachi is at the top

Karachi: The unemployment rate in Sindh reached 3.9%, Karachi division tops the unemployment rate with 11.18%, unemployment rate is higher among educated youth compared to illiterate youth.

A joint research has been conducted by Gallup Pakistan and Pride taking into account the data of the Labor Force Survey 2020-21, according to which the overall unemployment rate in Sindh has reached 3.9 percent, youth between 15 to 29 years. The unemployment rate is the highest, with the number of unemployed persons with certified masters and PhD degrees reaching 23.6 percent.

A strange thing has come out in the report according to which a large proportion of educated youth are unemployed in Sindh compared to less educated youth.

Dr. Shahid Naeem, Director of Policy and Research of PRIDE, has said that a significant percentage of 41% of the unemployed youth in Sindh have obtained matriculation or intermediate education. In Sukkur and Shaheed Benazirabad divisions, this rate has reached 33%, 47%, 42%, 34%, 46% and 27% respectively.

The report said that the Sindh government needs to take drastic measures to introduce technical skills in the mainstream of education so that boys and girls can find employment after graduation.

One lakh families are covered in the Labor Force Survey conducted by the Bureau of Statistics. According to the key findings of the survey, the divisions of Sindh differ significantly in terms of population with Karachi being the largest with 16.7 million and Mirpur Khas the smallest with 4.5 million.

Hyderabad division has the largest share of rural population (7.1 million) while Karachi has the largest share of urban population (15.5 million). Demographic analysis shows that there are 13.2 million youth between the ages of 15 and 20 in Sindh alone.

The unemployment rate of women in Sindh province is higher than that of men which is 3.3% versus 6.6%. The rate is higher among rural residents than urban residents at 2.1 percent versus 5.9 percent.

The survey data shows that Karachi has the highest youth unemployment rate at 11.2 percent while Larkana has the lowest rate at 3.4 percent.

The distribution of unemployed youth by level of education indicates that youth with matric but less than intermediate level of education have the highest unemployment rate at 22.2 percent. Among youth with MPhil and PhD, this rate is 0.1 percent, while among youth with less than one year of education, this rate is 0.4 percent.

In Sindh, the unemployment rate among women with university level education (engineering, medicine, computer science, agriculture and other subjects Masters, Ph. This ratio is 23.6 percent among the youth belonging to Sindh.
