Karachi: The talented computer engineers of Karachi have developed a smart helmet and accident alert system to protect motorcyclists from accidents and to ensure the provision of immediate medical assistance in the event of an accident.

Equipped with a solar charging system along with vibration sensors, GSM and GPS system installed in the helmet, this helmet is the result of the efforts of Mohammad Al-Tamish Akhtar and Mohammad Fahad, graduate students of Computer Science Department of Indus University. The aim is to save the lives of motorcyclists in Karachi by ensuring the provision of immediate medical assistance in case of traffic accidents.

In case of an accident, this helmet notifies the accident or emergency by issuing an alert to friends or family on specific numbers along with emergency facilities, ambulance and emergency wards of nearby hospitals and also informs the location of the motorcycle rider wearing the helmet.

According to a report published in the Pakistan General of Medical Science, 87 percent of the accidents in Karachi involve motorcyclists, of which 43 percent are young people between the ages of 18 and 29. 15% of these accidents result in serious injuries that lead to disability. 32 percent of riders sustain a head injury, 64 percent sustain a leg injury and 37 percent sustain a hand injury.

87% of motorcyclists who are victims of accidents do not wear helmets, this data indicates the dangers to the lives of motorcyclists in Karachi and the loss of life can be minimized by providing quick medical assistance in case of an accident. can go.

Altamish and Fahad’s innovation also aims to save the lives of motorcyclists. The solar-charged smart helmet and emergency alert system is equipped with a common helmet-mounted sensors, pressure plate and GPRS system along with GSM, said Muhammad Altmish Akhtar. In the initial sample (prototype) most of the components are outside the helmet which in the final solution will be installed inside the helmet thus protecting it from the impact of rain water and wear and tear.

In case of an accident, the Ambulance service through the vibration sensors system issues an alert to friends and family on pre-specified numbers along with the emergency of nearby hospitals, the location is also shared with the alert, thus the accident-prone motorcyclist. The provision of immediate emergency medical assistance is made possible for motorcyclists in other emergency situations by pressing a button to manually issue an alert. In case of a helmet fall, the alert will not be issued because the pressure plates inside the helmet. are installed which are only active when a helmet is worn.

Mohammad Al-Tamish Akhtar said that this helmet has cost 10 thousand rupees which will be reduced going forward. It is also possible to add more features to the helmet, including machine learning and virtual head-off display. The virtual head of display facility will enable map and communication on the helmet screen with virtualization. As will be visible on the windscreen, the cost will also increase if additional features are added, as per initial estimates, the cost of a helmet with machine learning and virtual head-off display facilities will double.

Altmish said that some investors have shown interest in manufacturing this helmet on a commercial basis, as it is a viable and profitable idea from a business point of view, which has a wide market and high social impact. Bike manufacturing companies can also take advantage of this facility and play their role in promoting technology to make the lives of their customers safer. He said that in the next phase, they will work on the architecture of the helmet, which requires more resources.
