A 78-year-old American citizen was sentenced to life imprisonment in China for espionage.
John Shing Wen Leung holds a US passport and a Hong Kong permanent residence permit.
The Suzhou City Court said that John Sheung was found guilty of espionage, so he was sentenced to life imprisonment, while his political rights were revoked for life.
According to a foreign news agency, in April 2021, the Suzhou city authorities took necessary steps in accordance with the law.
The court statement did not provide further details of the charges.
It should be noted that in April this year, China changed its anti-espionage laws and broadened the definition of a spy.
China has banned the transfer of any information that authorities deem to be related to ‘national security’.
