Ankara: Counting of votes for presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey continues after the polling time has ended.
According to local media reports, polling for the presidential and parliamentary elections began at 8 am and continued till 5 pm without any break. The turnout in the election was more than 88 percent.
So far, 33 percent of the votes have been counted. According to the preliminary results, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is ahead with 53 percent of the votes, while opposition leader Kemal Kilic Daroglu is in second place with 41 percent of the votes. A tough competition is expected in both.
Any presidential candidate must receive half of the total votes to win, and if no one receives half of the votes, a run-off election will be held on May 28 between the two candidates with the most votes.
For the first time, Recep Tayyip Erdogan faces a more united opposition than retired civil servant Kemal Kilic Daroglu and his six-party coalition.
Across the country, voters organized rallies for their candidates. The streets were mostly spotted by supporters of the Turkish president, who have started celebrating since the initial results.
