A fire at a gold mine in Peru has killed 27 people, in what officials say is Peru’s worst mining accident in decades.
Officials have said that 2 people have been saved from burns in the accident, but no one else is expected to survive.
The fire broke out due to an electrical short circuit inside the La Esperanza gold mine in Arequipa, Peru.
According to local media reports, around 30 expert rescue workers took part in the rescue operation to remove the dead bodies and injured people from the mine.
Flames and smoke from the mine fire could be seen far and wide.
According to rescue officials, the miners were working 80 to 100 meters (330 feet) underground when the fire broke out.
In the statement issued, the regional authorities said that the nearest police station was 90 minutes away from the accident site, while the nearest city was several hours away, which delayed the rescue operations.
It should be noted that Peru is one of the world’s largest gold producers, mining more than 100 tons of gold a year, which is 4 percent of the world’s annual supply.
