Kabul (PNP)Severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has caused widespread devastation in Afghanistan’s northeastern province of Nuristan. At least 20 people have been killed, more than 80 injured, and over 100 remain missing in various flood-related incidents.
According to Afghan authorities, the floods severely affected the provincial capital, Parun, and surrounding areas. Torrents of floodwater swept away homes, shops, and other properties, leaving extensive destruction in their wake.
Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said rescue teams are continuing search and rescue operations in the affected areas. So far, the bodies of 20 victims have been recovered, while the injured have been transferred to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Local officials reported that the riverside marketplace in Parun has been completely destroyed. Areas that once housed shops and hotels have now been reduced to mud, debris, and massive boulders.
Authorities said the floods have also severely damaged several hotels, dozens of shops, roads, and other critical infrastructure, cutting off road access to many affected communities.
The Afghan Disaster Management Agency has warned that more heavy rainfall and storms are expected in several provinces in the coming days. Residents have been advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas and to follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Nuristan is a mountainous province bordering Pakistan, where flash floods and landslides frequently occur during the monsoon season. Officials warn that the latest flooding could become one of the region’s worst natural disasters in recent years.
