Karachi: A staircase to the top floor of a residential building near Le Market Napier police station collapsed.

Late on Sunday night, the stairwell of a three-storey residential building named Abd-ur-Rehman at Lee Market Motel by Street Bhimpura near Old City Area Napier police station collapsed due to a loud explosion, trapping residents inside the building.

The rescue team reached the spot and brought down the 10 people including frail women and children in the house on the upper floor of the building and the animals on the roof.

Shahid Hussain, a resident of the building, said that the building was bought by his grandmother from a Hindu in 1941, after whose death it was given to her three sons, Sadiq Ali Abdul Rahman, Muhammad Ali and Anwar Ali, now the three sons. 5 children are living in the building with their families.

He said that till date the Sindh Building Control has not inspected this building and has not declared it damaged, the walls of the building are stronger than new buildings.

He said that if the residents of the building had invested some money and done the repair work, then this turn would not have happened. The building was established in 1843. The staircase of the building has fallen due to decay.
