Lahore: The Punjab Archeology Department has started the restoration and conservation work of an “unknown” Mughal era tomb in Lahore’s Begampura area.

Built in the Mughal style, this tomb is located in Begampora area of North Lahore, which is in a very dilapidated condition. After the archaeologists removed the debris from here, there are archeological remains of the basement below the tomb.

Punjab Archeology Department Director Conservation and Development Anjum Qureshi said that the work of removing debris, restoration and protection of the tomb is going on at the site. This is a tomb of the Mughal period, but only after investigation can be told who this tomb belongs to and when it was built.

He said that there is a grave in the basement below the mausoleum, but the lower part of the present floor is full of debris. He has suggested removing the interior of the tomb. After removing the debris, evidence of a basement beneath the tomb has come to light.

Anjum Qureshi said that after carefully cleaning the debris from the grave discovered in the tomb and preserving it in its original state, it has been decided to investigate the site further.

On the other hand, Syed Faizan Naqvi, who researches the ancient heritage and historical buildings of Lahore, said, “The way the Department of Archeology has started the repair work on some monuments of North Lahore is very welcome. He said that this work should have started many decades ago.

He claimed that this Mughal era building located in the Baghbanpura area of Lahore is not a tomb but the resting place of the guru of Rasul Shahi fakirs where he used to sit. He has also mentioned it in detail in one of his books written about the archeology of Lahore. This book will be published soon and will hit the market.
