Bad results of Interyear 1, NED lowers admission merit

Karachi: The aftershocks of the controversial first year inter-year results under the Board of Higher Secondary Education Karachi have started coming in and the NED University of Engineering and Technology has made a major change in the eligibility criteria of candidates for admission to its bachelor program.

This change has been made only in the eligibility of the candidates applying for admissions and now a student securing 55% marks in first inter year will also be eligible to apply for admission in NED University, earlier minimum 60% marks. A qualified candidate was eligible to apply for admission.

The decision has been approved by the Academic Council of NED University in its recently held meeting while the formal approval of the decision will also be taken from the Syndicate meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Sarosh Lodhi on Monday.

It should be noted that in the recent results of inter-year first pre-engineering and pre-medical, the success ratio of students was between 34 to 36 percent and 64 to 66 percent of students failed in these exams. is also so low that they are not eligible to apply for admission to many professional universities.

There are about 600 students who have taken A-1 grade in pre-engineering, while more than 2 thousand seats in NED University are for Karachi Board students, so this is the first time that there are less A-1 grades than the allotted admission seats.

It should be noted that the merit for admissions in NED is determined on the basis of the results of the first inter-year, however, due to the conditions of the Pakistan Engineering Council, the criteria of at least 60% marks could not be changed, so currently, to apply Eligibility criteria has been changed and concessions have been given to students.

NED Pro-Chancellor Professor Dr. Tufail Ahmed told “Express” that if the passing percentage of the student in the first year of inter-year is up to 55%, then he will be able to participate in the aptitude test by applying for admission.

He further said that if the student clears the trend test, his merit will be determined keeping in view the current situation, however, it will be mandatory for the student to enter the consolidated marks in the inter-year II results. Pass with minimum 60% or more marks otherwise his/her admission will be cancelled.

It should be noted that the admissions in NED University will start from March 24, while the aptitude tests will be held from May 3 to 7.
