The Election Commission's refusal to postpone the elections on the resolution of the Senate

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan apologized for postponing the elections on the resolution submitted in the Senate.

The Election Commission officials have informed the Senate Secretariat in a letter that the Election Commission reviewed the Senate resolution in the meeting and after considering it, it would not be appropriate for the Election Commission to postpone the general elections at this stage.

The letter stated that the Election Commission after consulting the President fixed the date of 8th February 2024 for polling while the Commission has issued instructions to the caretaker federal and provincial governments.

The commission said that the election commission has completed all the preparations for holding the general elections, in the past also the general elections and local body elections were held in winter.

It was clarified in the letter that the Election Commission has also given an assurance to the Supreme Court for the elections on February 8.

On the other hand, Senator Dilawar Khan has said in a letter to the Senate Chairman that the Senate passed the resolution to postpone the election on January 5 but is concerned that no steps have been taken to postpone the February 8 elections.

In a letter to the Senate Chairman, Senator Dilawar Khan said that attention should have been paid to the issues pointed out in the resolution, without resolving the issues, there is a compromise on conducting fair and transparent elections, it should be ensured that the February 8 elections are postponed.
