Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews became the first player in cricket history to be timed out in an International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup match. Former and current cricketers have criticized Bangladesh for their dismissal.
Former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh also lashed out at Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan for giving time out to Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews.
Mark Waugh in his statement on social media said that no fair-minded cricketer can even think of making such an appeal.
He said that forget what the rules are and what is the spirit of the game. A fair-minded cricketer would never make such an appeal.
Australian batsman Usman Khawaja asked that Angelo Mathews had reached the crease, then how was the time out?
Usman Khawaja said that the strap of Angelo Mathews’ helmet was broken after reaching the crease.
It should be remembered that this unique incident of cricket took place in the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In which Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka became the first player to be timed out in the history of cricket.
Angelo Mathews took more than the allotted two minutes to face the first ball, ordering a second helmet due to a broken helmet strap.
The twelfth player was late in bringing the second helmet, after which Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed to Angelo Mathews to call time out, which the South African umpire accepted and dismissed the Sri Lankan player without playing a ball.
According to the law, the new batter has to face the ball within two minutes.
In this regard, Sikandar Bakht said that the outing of Angelo Mathews was in accordance with the law but it is against the spirit of the gentleman’s game, Shakibul Hasan should not have appealed for timeout.
