Baltimore: Researchers have reported a new type of disease that could put one in three people at risk.
Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKM) refers to the relationship between metabolic diseases such as kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity and cardiovascular disease.
It is not technically a new disease but a new way of looking at how existing conditions affect each other.
According to the American Heart Association, one in three Americans have three or more risk factors that increase their risk of developing the condition.
The goal of CKM reporting is early diagnosis and treatment of the disease in people at risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
The advisory’s lead author, Dr. Shiadi Ndomele, of Johns Hopkins University, estimates that more than 90 percent of people fall on this spectrum.
He said that obesity and type 2 diabetes are the main causes in the US among older adults and children.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 42 percent of adults and 20 percent of children are obese, while more than 37 million people have diabetes.
The American Heart Association has proposed four stages for classifying the risk of developing CCM. Being on stage zero is the best. This means there is no danger to people. They eat a balanced diet, have a healthy weight and don’t smoke.
Stage one includes people who are overweight, especially with excess abdominal fat or are in the pre-diabetes stage.
In stage two, people develop diseases like high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Kidney disease may also occur at this time.
In the third stage, people have heart disease without symptoms. These individuals may have high blood pressure or early stages of cardiovascular disease or kidney disease and use statins.
