About 1 million people in Kuwait are suffering from food addiction. According to the research, 20 percent of the country’s population ie 940 thousand people are suffering from food addiction.
A ‘food addiction’ is defined as eating high-energy foods, unrelenting hunger and eating when not hungry.
Dr. Wafa Al-Hashash of Kuwait also conducted research on this topic in January 2022.
Dr Wafa says that food addiction works in the same way as drug addiction, in that it affects the brain’s neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters affect the amount of dopamine that causes the feeling of pleasure.
Over time, food addicts require large amounts of food to maintain a sense of pleasure.
People with binge eating disorder often become addicted to sugary, wheat-based foods, including pizza, chocolate, chips, burgers, cheese, pastries, and drinks.
