Lahore: Despite court orders, the citizen filed a contempt of court petition in the Lahore High Court for not announcing the date for the general elections of the provincial assembly in Punjab.
Citizen Munir Ahmed has made Punjab Governor, Election Commission and others parties in the contempt of court petition filed through his lawyer Azhar Siddique Advocate.
It is pointed out in the petition that the court had ordered the Election Commission to announce the date of the immediate elections after consultation with the Governor of Punjab, but the Election Commission did not follow the court orders. There are only 60 days left after Sunday, so the announcement of the election date cannot be delayed any longer.
According to the petitioner, elections are to be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the assembly, while 30 days have passed since the dissolution of the assembly and now 60 days are left. The petitioner’s counsel has pointed out that the election schedule has to be issued within 7 days of the announcement of the election date.
A legal point has also been raised in the petition that non-compliance with court orders falls under the category of contempt of court, so contempt proceedings should be initiated for non-compliance with court orders.
