Last month, doctors in Israel saved the life of 12-year-old Palestinian boy Sulaiman Hassan by reconnecting his head to his spinal cord.
Sulaiman Hassan, a resident of the West Bank of Occupied Palestine, had his head severed from his spinal cord when he was hit by a car while traveling on his motorcycle.
Immediately after the accident, Suleiman was airlifted to the Hadasa-N-Karim Trauma Unit in Jerusalem, where a team of doctors immediately began surgery on him.
Doctors Ohad Enyo and Zivo Asa reattached Suleiman’s severed neck to his head after this extremely difficult surgery. The operation lasted for several hours and was supervised by an intensive care team of expert surgeons.
According to the doctors, only the skin of Sulaiman’s neck was attached to his head otherwise his skull was completely separated from the spine. The hospital waited for a month to announce the results, to be absolutely sure of the success of the operation.
Sulaiman can now walk on his own without any support and has been discharged from the hospital with a cervical splint, but doctors will continue to monitor him until he fully recovers.
Doctors said that internally when the head is separated from the body, the tissues and muscles are torn, which separates the head from the body resting on the last disc of the spinal cord.
He further said that this type of injury occurs less than one percent in spinal injuries. While more than 70 percent of such cases die.
According to doctors, decapitation means severing the head from the body, but in this case the major blood vessels were preserved, the muscles did not leave the skull and the skin was attached.
